Whether you’re heading out for an evening stroll or getting your dance shoes on for a big night out, you won’t get far before stumbling across a venue with a live band or guest DJ.
Considering we’re such a small island, visitors are often both surprised and impressed at the musical talent that resides here. Home to Thai and international artists, live music sessions usually start around sunset and run on through the night in increasing volume and intensity.
Sunset Sessions
Many beachfront venues hire musicians to serenade their customers into sunset. So if you’re walking along the beach any time from 5 pm onwards, you’re bound to be drawn into one of them by some soulful vocals. Sunset sessions are pretty chilled, and sets usually comprise a mix of easy listening, soul, and pop covers.

Live Bands
Many of Koh Tao’s party bars hire live bands to get the dancefloor moving in the evenings. Artists typically hit the stage between 8 pm and 9 pm and play for 2-3 hours. Normally comprising a drummer, lead guitar, bass guitar, and a vocalist, most bands are happy to take requests. Genres include pop, rock, jazz, and RnB.

DJ Sets
DJs take to the decks once the bands have retired for the evening to keep the party atmosphere going. Disco, drum and bass, Latino, and house music are just a few specialty nights organized regularly by some of the later-night party bars. Koh Tao is home to several resident DJs but also attracts several international guest artists

Karaoke
For those who prefer to grab the mic themselves rather than listen, you’ll be pleased to hear that a few venues host weekly karaoke nights. There’s even a couple of bars that take interactive live music to a whole new level by running open mic nights where anyone can join in the fun by getting up to sing a few songs with the house band.
